Sergio Perez admitted his crash during testing yesterday was his fault.

He was trying the hard tyres when he crashed at turn eight. Perez said: “We were trying different compounds at different times. Afterwards I had the crash, it was a bit unfortunate, we had to end the day a bit early.

“Still I think it was not too bad a day. Hopefully we can have a better two days with Kamui [Kobayashi] so we can have good information from everything.

“I just lost the rear in turn seven. There was nothing wrong with the car I just lost the rear. It was my mistake.

“I tried to be optimistic to maximise. Every time I go in the car I try to be at the limit to feel the changes and to drive the same way. I just gave my maximum today and it happened that I had a crash. I feel sorry for my team.”

Perez said his relationship with his new team mate is “very, very good” and feels he is benefiting from the track time he’s had in the car so far: “I think I am getting better and better every time I jump in the car.

“I think I am getting experience. I know what the car needs, how to maximise the different compounds, in this way I am getting better to understand the communication with my race engineer and with my team.”

        1. “Lost the rear” presumably refers to some sex scandal. Very British if you ask me ;-)

    1. Exactly. And losing the car when trying a new type of tyre compound in testing, is what testing is for, to get to know where the limit is.
      A rookie finding the limit by going over it is quite normal and perfectly acceptable. Shame he damaged the car pretty heavily in that crash, but thats how it goes.

      Personally, the more I hear about this guy, the more I like him. It’s not like we don’t expect a rookie to make big mistakes, and in the end. He’s only made one.

      1. Hamilton had a big crash when he was a rookie doing testing in 2007.
        Also 2 crashes in testing last year.

    1. Who’d have thought it was in the barriers… I’d never have thought to look for it there ;)

      1. yeah well you have to over step the limit to find the limit to find the true limit, pushing so hard that you crash shows commitment and aggression! its part of motor sports, all the top drivers had crashes last year going beyond the limit. Thats one thing i don’t like about Heidfeld he doesnt seem like he as agressive as he could be and his lack of crashes in his career shows this and its not a good thing.

  6. Sergio has been reasonably in pace during the tests. Very similar long stints when compared to Kobayashi.

    That’s what testing is for. Find the limits of each configuration, get to know the car. He won’t have in season testing to do it.

    And just as a remainder, Hamilton crashed in testing, Di Resta went off today, Kobayashi went off today, Maldonado crashed heavily yesterday, Massa spent his first season crashing during practice, qualy and races… cool off, it’s part of the learning process.
