It was another nip-and-tuck battle between then Mercedes drivers in Brazil – but this time it was won by Nico Rosberg.
Lewis Hamilton gave chase as best he could but skidded off at Descida do Lago while trying to gain enough time to jump ahead of his team mate.
“Sorry guys, brake bias too rearwards,” he explained on the radio after spinning off, before suggesting the tyres were only up to doing one flat-out lap at the end of the stint.
As we’ve seen on previous occasions this year, Rosberg prefers not to get too many reminders of the gap when his team mate is bearing down on him. However for much of the final stint the gap was non-existent, Hamilton breathing down Rosberg’s neck.
The Williams drivers were compromised by various problems in the pits. Felipe Massa had a pit lane speeding penalty and Valtteri Bottas had to modify his pit stop procedure to look after his engine. Later in the race he was also advised to alter his driving style in order to protect his motor.

2014 Brazilian Grand Prix team radio transcript
|PR||Guillaume Rocquelin||Sebastian Vettel||We’ve got fairly busy procedures at the start of the race and it’s essential that they’re done in sequence. I think you know them. I’ll just go through them with you once, which is once the car is fired up and on the deck, two static, then you need to go to mode eight, limiter on, toggle torque, and do launch. You can toggle torque with a [unclear] if you want, that’s fine.|
|PR||Marco Schupbach||Adrian Sutil||The wind is, I think you felt it already, still blowing in your face when you brake for turn one. It’s coming from the front there. Intensity is not so high, bit higher than yesterday.|
|PR||Lewis Hamilton||Peter Bonnington||How’s the temperature of the track?|
|PR||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||It’s dropping a bit. 46[C] now.|
|PR||Ayao Komatsu||Romain Grosjean||Grosjean was one of few drivers to start on the harder medium tyres, he is told which others are doing the same.|
Hulkenberg, Kvyat and Sutil from pit lane is on [mediums].
|PR||Lewis Hamilton||Peter Bonnington||My gut feeling is that I need to be… I should put that wing back in.|
|PR||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||You have lots of scope on the diff, Lewis.|
|FL||Mark Temple||Kevin Magnussen||Warm the brakes to heat the tyres but cool the engine please.|
|FL||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||So feedback on the start, please.|
|FL||Lewis Hamilton||Peter Bonnington||Feels slightly under-engaged, I think.|
|FL||Guillaume Rocquelin||Sebastian Vettel||All systems are good.|
|FL||Bernadette Collins||Jenson Button||And a bite point find and four burn-outs at the start of the pit entry.|
|2||Andrew Murdoch||Felipe Massa||Track slippery turn two, there may be oil down in turn two.|
|3||Valtteri Bottas||Jonathan Eddollls||Small rear graining at the moment.|
|3||Jonathan Eddollls||Valtteri Bottas||Copy, small rear graining.|
|3||Xevi Pujolar||Jean-Eric Vergne||OK to push the engine|
|3||Jean-Eric Vergne||Xevi Pujolar||I have a lot of understeer.|
|4||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||Just be mindful of these tyre temps. Rear right getting close to the limit.|
|5||Tony Ross||Nico Rosberg||So Nico try and get brake balance forwards. Rear temperatures hotter than fronts. So rear is becoming a problem.|
|5||Xevi Pujolar||Jean-Eric Vergne||OK Jev let us know on tyre condition.|
|5||Jean-Eric Vergne||Xevi Pujolar||It’s OK so far.|
|6||Andrew Murdoch||Felipe Massa||Massa was the first of the front-runners to pit.|
OK Felipe box now.
|7||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||Button was running behind Bottas. Both pitted on lap six and left in the same order.|
I think the car in front will be coming in the next lap.
|7||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||OK Jenson.|
|7||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||But it’s whether we want to get in traffic.|
|7||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||OK Jenson. Box this lap. We will have a clear track, we will come down two turns.|
|7||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||Roger. In this lap.|
|8||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||Jenson we could be racing cars at the pit exit.|
|8||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||You know what to do. Push, push.|
|8||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||OK Lewis box, box. [Medium] tyre, down two turns.|
|9||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||We’re going to be doing a long stint on these tyres. You know what to do.|
|9||Jean-Eric Vergne||Xevi Pujolar||OK now the deg is coming.|
|9||Xevi Pujolar||Jean-Eric Vergne||OK box now Jes, box.|
|10||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||The car ahead of Bottas is now Sutil. He’s on [medium] from the start of the race.|
|10||Gianpiero Lambiase||Sergio Perez||Perez had switched to medium tyres on lap six.|
So I think we can now gradually begin to increase our pace if you can.
|11||Andrew Murdoch||Felipe Massa||Massa was given a five-second penalty which he served at his second pit stop on lap 25.|
We have a stop-go penalty, we will serve this at the next pit stop but you need a five-second gap to the car behind.
|11||Felipe Massa||Andrew Murdoch||I don’t understand what I have to do.|
|11||Andrew Murdoch||Felipe Massa||OK we’ve got a five-second stop and go penalty. We will serve it at the next pit stop.|
|11||Felipe Massa||Andrew Murdoch||OK. So we stay on the track, right?|
|11||Andrew Murdoch||Felipe Massa||Copy that, stay on track.|
|11||Felipe Massa||Andrew Murdoch||What happened?|
|11||Andrew Murdoch||Felipe Massa||It was for speeding in the pit lane. We need to increase the gap to the car behind. Five seconds. It’s now 2.2.|
|11||Felipe Massa||Andrew Murdoch||OK. So we stay on the track, right?|
|12||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||That right-rear’s now over temp. Need to do some management.|
|12||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||Nice work.|
|13||Nico Hulkenberg||Brad Joyce||Front-right is getting a blister now.|
|15||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||Right-rear temperature under control but still very hot. Last set worn to zero on the right-rear.|
|15||Lewis Hamilton||Peter Bonnington||I have a vibration across the fronts, I think.|
|15||Lewis Hamilton||Peter Bonnington||I don’t recall having a lock-up but I’ve got a vibration on my tyres.|
|15||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||Yep we agree Lewis. It may be a bit of blistering but jut look after them as much as you can.|
|16||Simon Rennie||Daniel Ricciardo||Keep watching your mirrors for Raikkonen, he is catching you. I know you’re status six. If he gets much closer you might need to push on to Vettel to get DRS back.|
|16||Guillaume Rocquelin||Sebastian Vettel||Sebastian, Daniel has dropped back. Drop back a little as well to save your tyres.|
|17||Romain Grosjean||Ayao Komatsu||Rear-left is graining. Front, think it’s OK.|
|18||Marco Schupbach||Adrian Sutil||One more lap, defend as good as you can.|
|18||Lewis Hamilton||Peter Bonnington||It is a blister on the front-right.|
|18||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||OK Lewis if you can look after it as much as you can, just be careful with that front locking.|
|18||Nico Rosberg||Tony Ross||Message sounds edited.|
Still too much understeer in this car. And oversteer.
|18||Simon Rennie||Daniel Ricciardo||We believe Sutil is in this lap.|
|19||Guillaume Rocquelin||Sebastian Vettel||Good job. The [mediums] aren’t bulletproof at all. So they are overheating quite a lot. Make sure you look after them. I suggest keep the gap to Alonso.|
|21||Guillaume Rocquelin||Sebastian Vettel||Everyone is struggling with deg so stint length is critical.|
|21||Simon Rennie||Daniel Ricciardo||People who started on [mediums] are starting to pit. Some people have blistered the right-front on [mediums]. Deg is a bit higher than we expected but nobody is really struggling. How is the balance?|
|21||Daniel Ricciardo||Simon Rennie||It started off with understeer but now as I start to push the understeer is still there. I this rear’s always going to be the determining factor. But so far it’s manageable.|
|22||Mark Slade||Pastor Maldonado||Lotus switched both drivers from planned-two stop strategies to three stops.|
We’re going to go plan B.
|22||Pastor Maldonado||Mark Slade||Copy that.|
|23||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||For your information the Williams is not very good on cold tyres.|
|23||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||Understood Jenson.|
|23||Jonathan Eddollls||Valtteri Bottas||Pace is looking good, Valtteri.|
|24||Tony Ross||Nico Rosberg||Lewis pushing hard, gap to Lewis 1.8.|
|25||Brad Joyce||Nico Hulkenberg||Hulkenberg is told the strategies of the cars in front of him is one soft tyre stint followed by three stints on mediums. He did three stints on mediums then one on softs.|
So we think all cars ahead are on soft triple-medium except for Grosjean who looks like he’s trying to two-stop.
|25||Tony Ross||Nico Rosberg||So let us know what aero adjust you want down for the stop.|
|25||Nico Rosberg||Tony Ross||Down 0.4.|
|25||Andrew Murdoch||Felipe Massa||OK Felipe we’ll box this lap.|
|26||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||Starting to lose the rears a little bit. Is it overheating or is itnot hot enough?|
|26||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||Jenson that is overheating. Massa also… Massa’s in. Massa’s pitted. Let’s push. Target minus two.|
|27||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||Big oversteer.|
|28||Guillaume Rocquelin||Sebastian Vettel||You’ll be close to Magnussen at pit out.|
|28||Guillaume Rocquelin||Sebastian Vettel||Vettel made his second pit stop early on lap 24. It jumped him past three drivers, all of which he finished the race ahead of.|
You’re clear. You’ve also cleared Bottas who had a bad pit stop. You cleared Magnussen and Bottas. You’re now clear of Alonso. So settle in your pace, Alonso is doing low 16. 16.1 Alonso.
|28||Tony Ross||Nico Rosberg||Rosberg pitted, then Hamilton spun at Descida do Lago while trying to build up enough of a gap to jump ahead of him.|
OK so you can reduce your pushing. The other car has gone… made a mistake.
|29||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||Button was 3.5 seconds behind Massa before their second pit stops. Massa made his pit stop first, and despite having to serce a five-second penalty he stayed ahead of Button.|
Has Massa served his penalty?
|29||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||Yes Massa has served his penalty. Car in front Kvyat, ten-lap old [mediums].|
|30||Lewis Hamilton||Peter Bonnington||Sorry guys, brake bias too rearwards.|
|30||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||Don’t worry Lewis, all is not lost mate. Keep cracking on, just manage it early in the stint.|
|30||Jonathan Eddollls||Valtteri Bottas||Williams alter the pit stop procedure for Bottas to protect his engine.|
OK we need to go to neutral in the stop and an easy pull-away. Don’t find the hold revs. We need to look after the engine temps. You’ll get the signal, go on the lights.
|31||Brad Joyce||Nico Hulkenberg||How’s the balance now, Nico? This is a critical phase of the race so we need to be pushing as well as we can here.|
|31||Nico Hulkenberg||Brad Joyce||Not very good. I’m doing what I can.|
|32||Tony Ross||Nico Rosberg||So just be aware your team mate is pushing quite hard. Gap is six seconds. Just remember to control the gap.|
|32||Brad Joyce||Nico Hulkenberg||This pace is good, we are catching Raikkonen now.|
|34||Lewis Hamilton||Peter Bonnington||Hamilton advised his team the tyres won’t stand being pushed for two laps when they are very worn, as they were trying to do when he went off.|
Why not next time you tell me to push, and I only have one lap, use one lap of the tyre up, second lap there’s nothing left.
|34||Nico Hulkenberg||Brad Joyce||What are we doing on front wing next stop?|
|34||Brad Joyce||Nico Hulkenberg||It’s another set of mediums, it’s up to you. From this side plus half a turn but it’s up to you.|
|34||Nico Hulkenberg||Brad Joyce||No we’re not coming up, we need to go a bit lower on aero balance. The rear is a difficult tyre now.|
|37||Tony Ross||Nico Rosberg||Gap to Lewis is 5.3.|
|37||Nico Rosberg||Tony Ross||Don’t tell me the gap any more for a while, please.|
|37||Tony Ross||Nico Rosberg||Copy.|
|38||Nico Rosberg||Tony Ross||How many laps?|
|38||Tony Ross||Nico Rosberg||Rich 12.|
|39||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||Car behind is now Vettel, his [medium] tyre is three laps older than yours.|
|40||Daniel Ricciardo||Simon Rennie||Ricciardo suspected he had a brake failure, it turned out to be a problem with his suspension, and it put him out.|
Yeah left-front brake’s gone, I can feel it start to wobble. Shall I just cruise back to the pits?
|40||Simon Rennie||Daniel Ricciardo||Yeah understood Daniel. If you think it’s unsafe, stop the car. Otherwise drive back slowly.|
|40||Adrian Sutil||Marco Schupbach||The tyres are going down.|
|40||Marco Schupbach||Adrian Sutil||OK, is one more lap OK?|
|40||Marco Schupbach||Adrian Sutil||Quick. OK box, box.|
|40||Adrian Sutil||Marco Schupbach||OK.|
|41||Simon Rennie||Daniel Ricciardo||OK Daniel we’re going to inspect the car, box this lap. Will be a slow pit stop. We’ll let you know if we’re going to send you again.|
|41||Daniel Ricciardo||Simon Rennie||I’m pretty sure it’s done.|
|41||Simon Rennie||Daniel Ricciardo||OK Daniel switch off, please, switch off.|
|41||Daniel Ricciardo||Simon Rennie||OK. Yeah, so started to feel basically a wobble on the brakes for the last five laps.|
|41||Simon Rennie||Daniel Ricciardo||We’ll have a bit more of a chat when you jump out.|
|41||Simon Rennie||Daniel Ricciardo||OK.|
|43||Antonio Spagnolo||Kimi Raikkonen||It’s close to be a two-stop. If we can manage to [unclear] this run until the end. We need around four laps, four laps more we need.|
|43||Jonathan Eddollls||Valtteri Bottas||Do you think we need to stop? Is this tyre dead.|
|43||Valtteri Bottas||Jonathan Eddollls||Yeah we have maybe one lap left so we better stop.|
|43||Jonathan Eddollls||Valtteri Bottas||Copy. Box now.|
|44||Daniil Kvyat||Marco Matassa||I’m a lot quicker than Jev, I can get past Hulkenberg.|
|45||Gianpiero Lambiase||Sergio Perez||You are free to push now on these tyres if you can, if there’s anything left in it Checo.|
|45||Guillaume Rocquelin||Sebastian Vettel||Any extra laps we do in this stint will help us in the next one.|
|46||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||Is everything OK?|
|46||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||Yes, Jenson, this is good.|
|46||Tony Ross||Nico Rosberg||Gap to Lewis is 2.5. It’ll be rich 3 at the end of this lap.|
|46||Andrew Murdoch||Felipe Massa||We need at least six more timed laps from this tyre set.|
|47||Guillaume Rocquelin||Sebastian Vettel||Right Sebastian we would like two hard laps now please. Your right-rear is on the limit, I appreciate that. So two laps as fast as you can.|
|49||Guillaume Rocquelin||Sebastian Vettel||Box, torque map one and box, Careful on pit entry, it’s very slippery.|
|49||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||JB Vettel’s pitted, let’s push now.|
|50||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||Jenson it’ll be 22 laps. The next tyre is a new one.|
|51||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||McLaren tried to bring Button in on the lap before Massa, but he failed to make it in and they came in on the same lap.|
In this lap or not?
|51||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||Box, box this lap.|
|51||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||Too late, too late.|
|51||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||Jenson we are box this lap. Push, push.|
|51||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||Box this lap.|
|52||Tony Ross||Nico Rosberg||Lewis exiting the box now, should be safe by 1.5 seconds.|
|53||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||And Jenson car in front is Raikkonen on six-lap-old [medium]. He may go to the end, we need to overtake him.|
|53||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||OK.|
|53||Andrea Stella||Fernando Alonso||Box now, box, Start map on.|
|54||Jenson Button||Tom Stallard||How many laps did we do on the last set of tyres?|
|54||Tom Stallard||Jenson Button||22 laps. And Jenson that was a used set, this is new.|
|55||Marco Matassa||Daniil Kvyat||Absolutely good job on fuel and tyres, Dany, keep going.|
|56||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||Just think about protecting that right-rear, Lewis, it is getting hot.|
|56||Jonathan Eddollls||Valtteri Bottas||Bottas continued to manage his engine problem.|
We need to use a lower gear in turn ten [Bico de Pato] for the engine, remember torque nine for more push if you need.
|57||Andrew Murdoch||Felipe Massa||OK Felipe 15 laps to go, just keep managing the tyres.|
|58||Nico Hulkenberg||Brad Joyce||Now the rear feels good again.|
|58||Xevi Pujolar||Jean-Eric Vergne||Rear tyre temperatures still high. Next two cars behind Rosberg and Hamilton, you’ll get blue flags soon.|
|59||Brad Joyce||Nico Hulkenberg||Tyres looks good, that was a good lap time. We think Kimi behind is going to the end. We’re now racing Magnussen, we outpaced him on that lap, two-tenths.|
|60||Jonathan Eddollls||Valtteri Bottas||For info, behind Pastor are Rosberg and Hamilton who are battling for the lead. So they’ll be going through Pastor shortly, and we need to look out for them. I’ll keep you advised. Respect engine speed turn ten.|
|61||Mark Temple||Kevin Magnussen||For info car in front is Kvyat. He will have to pit again as he’s not yet run a [soft]. There’s also Hulkenberg, who’s currently just inside our pit gap. He too will have to pit and fit a [soft]. We will be racing Hulkenberg at the end.|
|63||Andrew Murdoch||Felipe Massa||OK next car behind is Button, he’s P4 and he’s 12 seconds behind you.|
|65||Mark Temple||Kevin Magnussen||Hulkenberg’s tyres will deg off at the end of the race. Let’s give it everything to keep him behind now, he will struggle at the end.|
|65||Andrew Murdoch||Felipe Massa||We need a bit more management on the rear tyres.|
|67||Romain Grosjean||Ayao Komatsu||Grosjean retired.|
Loss of power.
|67||Ayao Komatsu||Romain Grosjean||OK we are looking, scenario 11.|
|67||Romain Grosjean||Ayao Komatsu||Do I retire? There’s smoke fromther back of the car.|
|67||Ayao Komatsu||Romain Grosjean||OK stop the car.|
|67||Romain Grosjean||Ayao Komatsu||Yeah [unclear]|
|67||Ayao Komatsu||Romain Grosjean||OK try to stop close to fire marshal please. P1 then wait for ten seconds, then go to P0 please.|
|VL||Tony Ross||Nico Rosberg||Well done Nico, good job, great job out there in difficult conditions. Strat one, charge the battery, really good job Nico.|
|VL||Nico Rosberg||Tony Ross||Thanks a lot guys, great job.|
|VL||Peter Bonnington||Lewis Hamilton||Well done Lewis, great effort there mate, great racing. Just sorry about that stop.|
